Today I prayed with James. The Lord led me to bring two meals for the ministry and sent me to the intersection of 38th and Hiawatha. As soon as I arrived I saw James and another person on the opposite side of the street. The other person turned out to be James' girlfriend Sandra. I talked with James for a while, prayed of him, and we took the Lord's Supper together. He and Sandra have been homeless for 3 years. James has grown children in St. Louis. He just started to receive Social Security benefits and is eager for a fresh start.
Today taught me that when one does the Lord's work, salvation becomes a tangible and powerful force in one's life. I am not saying that salvation comes by works, I am saying that doing what we have been commanded to do pleases the Lord and makes His greatest work that much more evident in our lives. I also learned that if you have never taken the Lord's Supper on a median in the middle of rush hour with a new friend, you haven't really lived. I will take the street corners, alleyways, medians (along with the brothers and sisters they provide) over the most ornate chalice and gilded cathedral any day.
