I have taken many a preaching class and read a multitude of books on the subject of sermonizing. As a result, I have amassed hundreds of illustrations. Here's a good one:
A small child gets lost in the deep snow, unable to make his way home The father goes out to rescue the child and upon finding the child, the father has several ways/plans to ponder concerning his next steps… He could set an example and ask the child to follow the path that the father makes, but this is not feasible because the snow is too deep for the child (the child would quickly fall behind and get lost again). A second plan is to leave the child where he is (the father saves himself and returns home without the child; of course, no good father would ever do such a thing). Another way is for the father to take the child's hand and lead him home- breaking through the snow for the child (the child walks in the strength and guidance of the father).
