Last summer Jeff Morton came from South Dakota to meet me and discuss an upcoming mission trip to Minneapolis. He asked me what was going on at our church and I began to give the obligatory answers (numbers of baptisms, attendance records, Bible College updates, etc.). He stopped me during my "report" and said, "Jake I don't really care about those numbers. I want to know about transformation. Tell me about people in your church whose lives have been transformed by God?"
Today I spent my prayer time asking God to bring transformation to His churches in this city. We have become quite adept at superficial transformation of our buildings and even better skilled at amassing programs to try and "disciple" church members. However, we need the lives of the people in our churches to be changed. Too many have been stagnant for too many years. This change will not come by any human means, it is God's work. We need to stop relying on "chariots and horses."
There is an account of great transformation in the town of Nineveh recorded in Jonah 3 (coincidentally, Jonah is the book I recite from memory every Sunday). Folks, If we want that kind of city-wide change it begins with us. Do you want God to change your life? Let me ask that again- Do you want God to change your life?
I do. And for those of you who know me, the fact that I am up at 6AM on a Sunday (the only other people I saw outside were 2 ice fishermen and 1 dog walker) in prayer is certainly an indication that God is up to something in me. Bring it on Heavenly Father.
