Today I prayed on 38th Street East in Minneapolis. This stretch of road is primarily residential but there are small businesses located on the corners where 38th Street crosses the busier avenues. I clearly remember the "Relax a Lounge" brothel that was located on the corner of 38th and Cedar. No I did not patronize this establishment but the image of the ladies standing in front of the building clad only in negligee as they tried to lure in customers is forever embedded as a part of my childhood. It certainly was not a good thing for the city and especially not for the women involved...
I thanked God for delivering 38th st. from such lurid activity. I prayed for safety for the residents and children. I prayed for the businesses and restaurants. Many of them immigrant owned and all of them very unique. Where else in this city can you gas up your car, buy homemade caramel corn, hand crafted chocolate alligators, get your lawnmower repaired, buy firewood, purchase a vintage 45 RPM record player and platters to go with it, eat a Caribbean lunch, and get some fresh jalepeno cheddar dogs from an actual butcher all within the span of 4 city blocks?
I was struck by the beauty of the murals, community gardens, and architecture on this street. I had to filter out several great photos but I selected this sculpture of 2 eagles flanked by the American and USMC flags (located on 38th and 16th) to represent this great street.
