"Passionately Seeking & Speaking the Love of Jesus Christ"

     Dateline: Phillips West

A while back I installed a swinging door between the dining room and kitchen in our house. Antioch, my beloved son, loves to go through this door for two reasons; Unlike other doors which require more effort since they have locks and doorknobs he can easily open it. The second reason is that this door leads to the kitchen which has food... his current driving force in life.

His "overuse" of this door eventually led him to discover that if he pushed it a certain way he could lock the bottom hinge so that the door remained open. This would make his path to the kitchen even easier. He managed to find a shortcut.

So last week I set out to correct the situation which involves adjusting the automatic hinges. As I attempted the repair, Antioch followed my every step with the intent of "helping" me with this project. As I looked in the cupboard for the tool required for the task, my vision was blocked by the back of his head. When I went to adjust the settings on the hinge, two little hands fumbled around making their own adjustments. Whenever I tried to cautiously open and close the door to test the hinge, he pushed it as hard as he could (most likely attempting to make his shortcut again).

Throughout this process I thought of all the times I have tried to "help" God do His work in my life. How many times have I made my own shortcut and subsequently tried to use my fumbling hands to fix the error? How often does our heavenly Father graciously display His patience with us as we "get in His way" when He is trying to help us? How much of my life has been dedicated to trying the same shortcuts over and over again?

My prayer for you today is that you let God do His work. What needs repair in your life, I pray that you would resist the temptation to do it yourself. Let the expert, your Daddy, do what He does best.
