"Imperfect People Serving a Perfect God"

Dateline: The intersection of Sesame and Straight Street.

Proverbs 8:17 I love those who love me, and those who seek me diligently find me.

Antioch's favorite "person" in the world is Elmo. Prior to parenthood, my only exposure to Elmo was in newspaper articles which chronicled the frantic sales of his latest toy at Christmastime. Now, Elmo might as well be considered a member of my household for the next census. Antioch watches Elmo on TV, reads books about him, wears clothing bearing his image, plays with toys endorsed by him, and frequently talks about him. Although my son says, "EL-no" we know exactly to whom he is referring.

While taking a bath Antioch sees Mr. Bubble on a bottle, points and exclaims, "EL-no!" During a diaper change he sees his best buddy's image on his Pampers, "EL-no!" There is a picture of Mr. Potato Head on the kids menu at Applebee's, "EL-no!" Going past the toy aisle at Super Target, "EL-no." The Netflix menu (in which Sesame Street conveniently has a picture of "you know who"), "EL-no!" Looking at the ceiling in our living room, "EL-no!" (I don't understand that one either). Waking up from a nap his first words are sometime a whispered, "el-no." Perhaps the most astounding example is when I hold Antioch up to a mirror and ask, "Who's that?" His response? You guessed it, "ELNO!"

There are a few different Biblical applications I could use with this story. One would be childlike faith. Another would be the doctrine of God's omnipresence. But I am going to go with this, God loves you. During his show Elmo always tells his audience, "Elmo loves you!" I am certain that whenever Antioch hears his best friend tell him those words he is certain that Elmo is really saying, "Elmo loves YOU" (YOU = Antioch).

My advice is to read a Scripture about God's love and understand that your Heavenly Father means YOU.
